Updated
A riding arena changes with use. Material moves towards the perimeter, tracks develop and the surface can become uneven. Maintenance keeps a working surface in good condition. Renovation becomes relevant when wear or other problems call for a larger intervention.
Sport Surface Group works with surface replacement and top-ups, seasonal maintenance, planing, deep harrowing and milling. The appropriate work depends on the surface, how the arena is used and where the problem lies.
When the surface no longer performs as before
When a customer experiences problems, SSG often starts by reviewing how the arena is watered. Describe recurring tracks, uneven material distribution or a thinning top layer. Tell us whether the problems change in rain or dry weather and how routine care is carried out.
The top layer or a problem beneath it?
New top material is not always the whole solution. If the problem is caused by the underlying construction or water drainage, it may need to be addressed before new material is added. The choice of work therefore needs to be based on the cause of the problems.
Different tasks for different needs
The approach needs to suit the material and the condition of the arena. Not every task is appropriate for every surface.
- Planing, deep harrowing and milling.
- Top-ups to the existing top layer.
- Replacement of top material.
Care between maintenance tasks
Plan routine care around the material and the equipment you have. SSG's fibre sand and wood chip mix need a good water supply, regular watering and a suitable arena harrow. Working depth and other settings need to be chosen for the specific arena.
The fibre sand contains synthetic fibre, while the wood chip mix contains wood chips. The wood content breaks down over time, so the need for top-ups and renewal needs to be reviewed according to the arena's condition, use and care.
Reference project: Åbytravet in Mölndal
One of our facility projects is Åbytravet in Mölndal, where the work included planing and maintenance of the outdoor track.
Tell us about the arena before contacting us
Tell us where the facility is, whether the arena is outdoors or indoors, which surface it has and how it is used. Describe the problems, when you notice them and how you currently harrow and water the arena. Photos and details of previous material top-ups give a clearer picture of the starting point.

Frequently asked questions about maintenance and renovation
Is adding new sand enough?
It depends on the cause of the problems. Start by reviewing watering and care. If the underlying construction or water drainage needs attention, new top material may be insufficient.
How often does a riding arena need maintenance?
The need depends on material, use and care. Regular watering is essential for SSG fibre sand and wood chip mix. The timing of material top-ups or larger interventions needs to be assessed for the specific arena.
What affects the cost of renovation?
The cost needs to be assessed for the specific arena and the work you agree on. After advice and agreement with the customer, SSG sends a quotation.
